Meltdown in the White House?

[Update @ 11:02am]: Oooh, there's a scorcher of an article in the New York Daily News today:

Bush whacked Rove on CIA leak
An angry President Bush rebuked chief political guru Karl Rove two years ago for his role in the Valerie Plame affair, sources told the Daily News.

"He made his displeasure known to Karl," a presidential counselor told The News. "He made his life miserable about this."

What makes this article interesting, beyond the breathless he-said he-said rumor-mongering, is that it's just a hair shy of explicitly naming George W. Bush himself as a co-conspirator in the outing of Valerie Plame. If the charges were any closer, we'd have to erect a flashing neon sign next to Bush reading "Traitor":

Bush has always known that Rove often talks with reporters anonymously and he generally approved of such contacts, one source said.

But the President felt Rove and other members of the White House damage-control team did a clumsy job in their campaign to discredit Plame's husband, Joseph Wilson, the ex-diplomat who criticized Bush's claim that Saddam Hussen tried to buy weapons-grade uranium in Niger.

Carrying things even further, some folks are connecting the Fitzgerald indictment rumors from the last few weeks and drawing a picture of a White House embroiled in a bloody civil war -- Karl Rove vs. Dick Cheney. In such a scenario, the "Cheney is focus of probe" leaks of the last few days were Rove's attacks, and today's bombshell was Dick's retaliation, an attempt to simultaneously slam Rove while protecting George. Unfortunately, it also strongly implies that Bush himself was part of the cabal that outed an undercover CIA agent -- which directly contradicts the Administration's earlier denials on the topic.

Now, I'm not entirely sure I buy all this, but one things's for certain: the next few weeks ought to be very interesting.

I, personally, feel like Plankton from the climax of the Spongebob Squarepants movie: someone's about to get deep-fried, and I've got a lawn chair with a front-row seat of the proceedings. All I need is a bucket of popcorn...

[Update @ 10:51am]: Official White House Liar Scott McClellan gave a non-denial denial when asked about the Daily News article...

[Update @ 11:02am]: Joshua Marshall has a great list of questions raised by the Daily News article.
