Dare I root for Rove?

According to the New York Times, Karl "Turb blossom" Rove's strategy for bringing out the Republican party's voting base come November is to scare them with the spectre of a Bush impeachment:

Rove Is Using Threat of Loss to Stir Republicans

...Heading into the election, many conservatives are disheartened by the war in Iraq, upset at what they see as a White House tolerance for bigger government and escalating federal spending, and divided over issues like immigration. The abrupt resignation on Friday of the director of the Central Intelligence Agency, Porter J. Goss, promised to feed the impression of an administration that is off balance.

But White House and Republican officials, trying to turn vulnerability to advantage, say conservatives could be united and re-energized by the possibility that Democrats could put Mr. Bush and his policies on political trial by winning control of even one chamber of Congress.

Now call me crazy, but since I'm constantly hearing about how George W. Bush's sinking poll numbers (Look, kids! A new all-time low!) and the Republicans' own bumper crop of scandals are dragging down the entire party, I'm wondering if this strategy won't play as expected:

GOP Commercial: "Vote Republican so George W. Bush won't get impeached."
Voter: "Izzat right? Damn, I'm definitely voting Democrat, then, just so they can give it to George good 'n hard!"

And it's not just the pissed-off liberals or disgruntled moderates who would be feeling this way, but also the 31% of conservatives who want the GOP out of power.

Now, granted, I don't believe that Karl Rove is an idiot -- he may be devoid of anything resembling a conscience, but it takes a kind of evil intelligence to concoct the numerous dirty tricks that Rove has. So if he's pushing a "don't let the Democrats impeach Bush!" angle, he must truly believe there's something to be gained from it.

But as a political non-wonk, a regular kinda guy who simply knows that his gut is telling him that something is seriously wrong with this country, I think a nation full of pissed-off voters would gladly punch ballots for anyone who promises to hold the Administration accountable.

Which puts me in the really weird situation of wondering if -- for the first time ever -- I should be cheering Karl on... Confused smiley
