A massive case of lurkeritis

When this site launched a year ago, I'd check my web stats on a daily basis, like any expectant parent would. I was getting around 300-400 visitors a day, which was a pleasant surprise; after all, it's not as if I'm offering original insights, gorgeous artwork, or half-naked elf babes on a daily basis. I still can't grok the idea of even a hundred folks wanting to drop by on a daily basis, given the niche geekery and ranting that I laughably call "content."

After a while, satisfied that the training wheels weren't going to fall off the bike, I got tired of looking at the stats and moved on to other things. On a whim tonight, however, I decided to peek at the stats again, just to see how things were doing...

...only to find that I'm now getting 600 to 700 visitors a day. Scared smiley

(And with a high of 1,200+ visitors last Thursday alone. Scared smiley Scared smiley Scared smiley )

While I'm not complaining by any means, I'm still baffled at the high traffic count, given the continued lack of original insights, gorgeous artwork, or half-naked elf babes here on a daily basis. I can only imagine that people are dropping by either out of bemused boredom or looking for cheap laughs, now that Grudge Match has shuttered its doors.

Some folks might see this as an opportunity to start running ads and make some money on the side, but not me -- I'm too innocently clueless to think of my guests as eyeballs, mere commodities to be hawked to the highest bidder. I'm just pleasantly surprised, nothing more.

(But geez, 700 visitors a day? Is everyone hiding behind the sofa or something?)

When poking at the traffic on dvandom.com, I've found that a LOT of it is bots. Google's image crawlers love my site, for instance. And bots don't post, usually, hence the comments here being mostly two or three people. :/

Oh, sure, shatter my delusions. Winking smiley

Actually, I think the stats filter out bot visits, though I haven't really dug into the documentation to verify one way or another. It looks like most of the traffic comes from folks linking to various articles, such as The Strange and Evil Tale of the Production of Superman V. Which simply reaffirms this site's role as the junk drawer of the internet. Grinning smiley
