Well, after a week of rumor-chasing and speculation, I bit the bullet and committed myself to an early-morning Wii hunt.
Since all the rumors were pointing to the major retailers holding their Wiis for the Sunday ad push, I decided to get queued up early for Sunday morning. The Target clerks were giving me vague "we might get some on Sunday" hints, and a Target with a massive launch-day supply was near my home, so I picked that one to camp out at.
Long story short, I got there yesterday morning at 5:30am (*yawn*), and was the third in line. Within ten minutes of my arrival, another four people showed up behind me. By 7:30am, we had 70 people in line while a clerk handed out tickets for 68 Wiis. The doors opened at 8:00, whereupon a security guard led a line of 100-plus
Wii shoppers to the electronics department. All was fairly orderly, except for a brief kerscuffle when some of the folks in the rear of the line started helping themselves to extra Wii remotes and nunchuks (the guard was sent to shoo them off).
After picking up my Wii, I breezed by Toys 'R Us and Circuit City, where people were waiting 100-plus-deep for those stores to open two hours later. I resisted the temptation to show off my newly-acquired Wii and gloat, honest.
Anyway, I've got my Wii, though I haven't opened it as it's my wife's Christmas present to me.
I have an extra pair of controllers and a copy of Excite Truck squirreled away, so I'm all set for a Wii Merry Christmas...
