Well, it's been a while since we've had a decent political sex scandal, so let's all thank Deborah Jeane Palfrey for breaking the drought.
For those who haven't heard, Ms. Palfrey is the so-called "D.C. madam," who's been charged with running a prostitution ring that's had thousands of prominent Beltway politicos among her clients. Rather than going quiety to jail, however, she's threatened to reveal her list of clients -- and pre-emptively sent a copy of said list to ABC News. Already, the White House's senior U.S. AID director Randall Tobias has announced his resignation after he was outed as one of Palfrey's clients (which, as this site has noted already, is ridiculously ironic given that Tobias had demanded anti-prostitution loyalty oaths for groups wishing to receive anti-AIDS funding.
But it's easy to predict that the fallout will go far beyound Tobias, as the usual conservative meatheads have already begun throwing feces at everyone involved except the po' innocent Republicans who frequented Pamela Martin and Associates.
Unfortunately for them, the memory of the Bill Clinton/Monica Lewinsky "any excuse for an impeachment" witchhunt is still fresh in the minds of the American people -- not to mention all the time spent by the Republican Party positioning themselves as the party of "superior" morality and "real" family values. The hypocrisy is so blatant that the jokes will write themselves; I hear Jay Leno's writers are thinking of taking an early summer vacation and turning over the joke-writing to a pimply-faced intern.
So break out the popcorn, grab a cold one, then settle down and enjoy the fireworks -- the spinning from the Republicans over Ms. Palfrey is gonna be a lot of fun!
P.S. And for the morons in the audience who don't see a difference between Deborah Palfrey's escort service and the Clinton-Lewinsky affair, I'll point out that while adultery may be immoral, prostitution is illegal (save for a few places in Nevada).
