Wanna bet who's REALLY in charge?

Sorry for the lack of updates lately, folks. Been hip-deep in a project that's sucking up all (and I mean all) of my free time, so I haven't been able to toss out new material for the site as often as I wanted to.

That said, I felt it was worth spotlighting these two recent headlines:

Iraqi PM: Troops Can Leave "Any Time They Want"

Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki shrugged off U.S. doubts of his government's military and political progress on Saturday, saying Iraqi forces are capable and American troops can leave "any time they want... We say in full confidence that we are able, God willing, to take the responsibility completely in running the security file if the international forces withdraw at any time they want," he said.

vs.

Gen. Pace: Another Troop Buildup Possible

The U.S. military's top general said Monday that the Joint Chiefs of Staff is weighing a range of possible new directions in Iraq, including, if President Bush deems it necessary, an even bigger troop buildup.

Making no predictions, Marine Gen. Peter Pace revealed that he and the chiefs of the Army, Navy, Marine Corps and Air Force are obliged to consider various troop-level scenarios before September, when Bush will receive an assessment of the Iraq situation from his top commander there, Gen. David Petraeus... [Pace] mentioned no potential range of increases or decreases in force levels. Another possibility being considered, he said, is maintaining the current level of troops for some period beyond September.

Now call me a cynical bastich here, but I get the feeling that Prime Minister al-Maliki is little more than a glorified sock puppet, and the U.S. troops in his country won't leave until the leadership (*spit*) in Washington says so. But I'm just a realist cynic...

al-Malaki isn't a sock puppet. He's a man with a plan. And the plan is, "Leave Iraq forever before the U.S. troops do!" Until then, he's just trying to do what it takes to avoid assassination. Windsock, not sock puppet.
