But the monster didn't die -- and now he wants REVENGE!
TOKYO -- Contrary to what most history books say, the U.S. military did not drop the atomic bomb on Hiroshima simply to end World War 2, but mainly to destroy Japan's secret weapons -- Godzilla and Rodan!
That is the oddball contention of a new book titled Project Bakemono by Dr. Yoshio Sakoda.
Even more alarming, the respected Japanese World War 2 historian warns that the A-bombs did not wipe out the creatures or their eggs -- and the gigantic monsters and their brood will soon erupt from hidden nests deep beneath the devastated cities.
"Humanity is facing an apocalypse of unimaginable proportions if these terrible creatures are released into the world," the expert declares in the book.
Astonishingly, Dr. Sakoda, regarded by his peers as a meticulous researcher, insists that Godzilla and his kin really exist.
He claims that in the later years of the war, a team of zoologists and geneticists working under the Japanese Imperial Army embarked on a top-secret project to create the ultimate biological weapon -- enormous real-life dragons.
"Our scientists recognized the potential of nuclear radiation to generate mutations," says Dr. Sakoda, who bases his assertions on classified documents he uncovered in a military archive in Osaka.
"By taking Komodo dragons and subjecting them to radiation, they were able to breed colossal dinosaur-like beasts capable of crossing vast oceans and laying waste to whole cities."
The monster-breeding research, dubbed Project Bakemono, was conducted at two secret facilities located in cavernous underground labs, one in Hiroshima, the other in Nagasaki, the historian says.
"According to the documents, at least two giant beasts were successfully spawned -- and one grew to a height of nearly 150 feet," says Dr. Sakoda.
Fortunately for the world, U.S. spies learned of the diabolical scheme.
"This was the real reason that President Truman ordered the dropping of the atomic bomb on those cities," reveals Dr. Sakoda.
Despite the shroud of secrecy surrounding the experiments, rumors about the project slowly spread in Japan. A film producer learned of the legend and in 1954 created the movie monster Godzilla -- based on the real thing. This was followed by a slew of sequels featuring a menagerie of brutish sidekicks, such as the airborne Rodan.
Dr. Sakoda says that while the real Godzilla and as many as 600 monster eggs were buried under millions of tons of rubble in the bombings, the creatures were genetically engineered to be indestructible -- and are probably still alive.
"Those eggs would not be fully incubated, which means that any day now, hundreds of Godzillas and Rodans could dig their way to the surface," says the scientist.
