Within days of his Second Coming, Jesus Christ (aka Prince of Peace, Savior, The Lord) is facing charges in a number of jurisdictions across the country.
What with all the talk about teaching "Intelligent Design" in the classroom, I thought I'd take a look at the whole concept, and I quickly concluded that if God, indeed, had created things the way the Bible says, then he's done some pretty shoddy work and has a lot to answer to.
Young-earth creationist Kent Hovind has built a dinosaur-filled theme park in the Florida panhandle and claims to prove that evolution is bunk. A visit there shows that it is definitely a fantasy land.
I see a religion which denies humanity's ability to construct its own ethical structure. It promulgates moral rules not in reference to any consequences they could have, but just "because He said so". Its followers are not encouraged to consider local conditions when making a choice, but rather to believe in a chimerical universal moral code, whether or not it is useful in a particular circumstance. It is abstract.
You may use a calculator, the Bible, the Koran, the Torah, and the Book of Mormon. The speed of light is c. Show all work. For all problems, assume a perfectly spherical Jesus of constant density D. No praying during the exam.
Defying predictions that he would fade from the political scene as a result of his showing at the 1992 Republican National Convention, Televangelist Pat Robertson has instead emerged as one of the country's most powerful political leaders. In the past three years, Robertson's Christian Coalition has grown from a small and sporadically successful organization into a political machine that regularly influences policy from local school boards to the halls of Congress. It has become the dominant organization in an increasingly significant political movement -- the Religious Right.
Milk appeared with the first mammals on the planet earth about 500 million years ago. Man, a recent creature of evolution, emerged only three million years ago. Like other mammals, man consumed milk of only his mother until weaned and then lived on fruit and berries and meat or fish. How he began to use milk from other mammalian species is a revealing story.
What a shame that we can't recruit more creationists to the ranks of Darwin. They are, after all, such perfect examples of the very thing they oppose: evolution.
I didn't really have time to hear another of young Wormwood's passionate presentations. Our soul quota for the millennium was still unmet, and it was already 1999. But since he's my nephew, I humored him.
Not really. Not intuitively. Indeed, the mere fact that God is something people have to 'believe' in is evidence enough. No one asks "Do you believe in gravity?" or "Do you believe that standing on train tracks as the train bears down on you is a Really Bad Idea?" But people always ask about God.
