When Wizard tapped artist Jim Lee to draw a Transformers poster for their magazine, it unleashed a flood of requests from fans for a new comic-book series. In response, Dreamwave Productions (established by brothers Pat and Roger Lee) acquired the comic-book rights to the Transformers, and released their first Transformers limited series in 2002.
The series was a success with both fans and retailers, and Dreamwave followed with other Transformers titles, which eclipsed the rest of their line. But for various reasons, Dreamwave soon suffered financial problems, and abruptly ceased operations in January 2005, leaving several still-unfinished titles and a never-released Beast Wars series in its wake.
