In June 2005, it was announced that San Diego-based publisher IDW had acquired the rights to produce a new Transformers comic book series. Embracing the move as a chance to broaden IDW's line to readers of all ages, Editor-in-Chief Chris Ryall announced the launch of a "teaser" Transformers issue #0 in October 2005 and the start of an ongoing series written by Simon Furman in January 2006.

At BotCon 2005 in Fort Worth, Texas, IDW also announced plans for a Beast Wars limited series to be released in February 2006. Running four issues, Beast Wars: The Gathering is written by Simon Furman, with art by Don Figueroa and Josh Burcham. IDW is also planning to reprint "best of" stories from Marvel's Transformers comics run.
