In response to continuing demand from older Transformers fans and collectors for more sophisticated toys, Hasbro and Takara worked together on a new, high-end line of transforming action figures. The result was first released in 2003 as Binaltech, combining licensed vehicle modes, nostalgic characters, complex transformations, and high-end materials like rubber tires and die-cast metal parts. With some minor cost-cutting efforts (such as replacing die-cast metal parts with plastic ones), they were subsequently sold in the United States as Hasbro's Transformers: Alternators line.

Binaltech Silverstreak
Perhaps due to its high-end nature, Binaltech did not have an accompanying mainstream cartoon or manga series. However, the Japanese Binaltech toys included glossy instruction booklets that included an ongoing Binaltech story, written by Japanese Transformers fan Hirofumi Ichikawa.
