Taking place ten years after the events of Transformers: Micron Legend, Seibertron is at peace, and the Cybertrons and Destrons have settled their differences after the deaths of Galvatron and Unicron. However, a creature named Alpha-Q seeks to reactivate Unicron, endangering the universe once more. To accomplish this goal, Alpha-Q has Scorponok lead the energy-eating Terrorcons to attack the Cybertron's cities on Earth, to steal the energon Alpha-Q needs to revive Unicron. Grand Convoy (Optimus Prime) leads the Cybertrons against this new threat, and is aided by Kicker, a human teenager with the ability to sense energon.

Further complicating the matter is the presence of Omnicons, former Cybertrons and Destrons who are able to mine raw energon without injury. Led by Rodimus Convoy (Rodimus) and Ariel, (Arcee) their aid proves invaluable when Galvatron is revived with plans to use Unicron in his plans of conquest.

Super Link was named after the toy line's new gimmick, where pairs of Cybertrons can link together to create a more powerful robot in a process called "superlinking." As with Micron Legend, this series was also a co-production between Hasbro and Takara, though more of the production was left to the Japanese this time around.

The toys and the show were released in the west under the title Transformers: Energon.
